Summer Youth Program Fund (SYPF*) Provides Grant for 2011 ABT Academy Summer Experience
Thanks to the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Arizona Broadway Theatre will receive a $5,000 grant from the Summer Youth Program Fund of Maricopa County for its Sixth Annual Academy for Young Performers' Summer Camp.
According to Kurtis Overby, ABT artistic associate who oversees the Academy, the award will be used to provide scholarships for children to participate in the Academy's popular summer camp and to defray expenses associated with the addition of a new camp session.
Overby indicated four separate sessions will be held during the summer in which children will learn about acting, music, movement and technical theatre. "The classes are great for beginners," he said, "but they also are very effective for those with theatre experience."
The latest addition to the program, Session One will feature an introduction to technical theatre skills for children ages 7 to 18. This camp will run from Monday, June 6, through Friday, June 10, 2011. This is a class-only session; there will be no performance. The one-week camp fee is $275.
Session Two begins Monday, June 13, and runs through Friday, June 24, for children ages 10 to 12. Students will prepare for a performance of Disney's Aladdin Jr., which will be held on the morning of June 25, 2011. The two-week camp fee is $425.
Session Three will run from Monday, June 27, through Friday, July 15, for youth ages 13 to 18. Students in this session will prepare for performances of The Wedding Singer, a musical based on the popular movie by the same name. Performances will be held on July 15 and Saturday, July 16. The three-week camp fee is $500.
Session Four begins Monday, July 25, and continues through Friday, July 29, for children ages seven to nine. These students will present the Disney classic 101 Dalmatians on Saturday, morning, July 30.
All sessions include lunch and snacks daily, plus workshop and rehearsal materials. Students who sign up for Session One will save if they also sign up for either Sessions Two, Three or Four.

ABT Holds ARTrageous Raffle
Arizona Broadway Theatre has recently received a generous donation of fine art from the Park West Foundation, headquartered in Southfield, Michigan.
In keeping with the foundation's stipulation that the in-kind gift be used as the focus of a fundraiser to benefit the not-for-profit theatre, ABT is holding an ARTrageous Raffle through Saturday, May 28, 2011, when the winning ticket for the unique piece of art will be drawn.
The contemporary work is a Monoprint on paper by artist Mikulas Kravjansky, framed in gold and numbered 1/1. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that guarantees the authorship of the work, which is appraised at $900.00.
Born in 1928 in Czechoslovakia, Kravjansky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava and later became an Assistant Professor at the University of Bratislava before becoming an Assistant Master at Humber College in Toronto. His designs and paintings have been exhibited in Prague, Budapest and Vienna. He also has had shows from Paris and Berlin to Cairo and Sao Paulo as well as exhibitions in New York, Toronto and elsewhere in South America.
Kravjansky has produced more than 80 editions of graphics. In combining traditional techniques of etching and collograph and his own process of dry point on copper over soft surface, Kravjansky's creative methods reflect the richness and variety of his perceptions about our contemporary environment.
Tickets for the ARTrageous Raffle are $10 each or three for $20. They may be purchased in person at the theatre or by calling the Box Office at 623-776-8400. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.
As a long-time family-owned and operated business, the Park West Gallery and its foundation are committed to building upon family values by "making significant contributions to strengthen the health, social, educational and cultural fabric of the communities they serve."

Leaving a Legacy
Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) lost a dear friend on February 1, 2011.
Meredith R. Flinn was a strong early advocate for the theatre and a founding member of the ABT Performing Arts Association, Inc. Board of Trustees. It was during her tenure as the Deputy City Manager of Peoria, Arizona that Meredith helped to find a location for ABT on Paradise Lane.
Unabashedly, ABT was Meredith’s passion. In addition to supporting the theatre’s Annual Fund, Meredith was one of the first season ticket holders and attended all of the theatre’s 40 mainstage productions since it opened in November 2005. During her last outings, Meredith’s presence graced ABT’s New Year’s Eve Gala and the opening night of My Fair Lady on January 7.
But her final magnanimous gesture was her wish to join ABT’s philanthropic Legacy Circle, which honors and recognizes the foresight and generosity of an individual who establishes a deferred gift to ABT through a bequest, trust or other estate planning provision.
Meredith’s legacy gift makes a powerful statement about her belief in the valuable role of the performing arts in people’s lives and in our communities. It also speaks to her desire to ensure the long-term vitality and sustainability of an institution she held so dear.
Arizona Broadway Theatre thanks and salutes Meredith Flinn – an extraordinary woman whose cherished friendship and dedication to our theatre will live in perpetuity.
The Velveteen Rabbit Takes Center Stage
Due to two generous grant awards to ABT, The Velveteen Rabbit will be focal point of a two-part program held in Surprise and Glendale on Tuesday, March 22, and Thursday, March 24.
Based on the classic children’s book by Margery Williams, the Velveteen Rabbit is presented with two options: become a real rabbit or stay with his sick friend to help him get better. Which choice will he make? At the end of the adventure, the Velveteen Rabbit learns that love makes all things real.
In Surprise:
ABT actors will present a simple reading of the adapted stage play at the Countryside Recreation Center on March 22 at 10 a.m. The full one-hour performance of the play will be held on March 24 at the same time and place.
The general public can pick up free tickets at the Northwest Regional Library beginning March 14. Seating is limited to 300 and tickets are required for admission.
In Glendale:
ABT actors will present a simple reading of the adapted stage play in the Glendale Public Library Auditorium on March 22 at 4 p.m. The full one-hour performance of the play will be held on March 24 at the same time and place.
Tickets are required for admission. The general public may pick up free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis at the Glendale Public Library 20 minutes before the doors open for the programs. Individuals must be in line in order to get their own tickets. (Holding space in line or picking up tickets for others is not allowed.) Seating is limited to 240.
Both programs also have an art project focusing on The Velveteen Rabbit. For more information about the art component, contact the Glendale Public Library and Northwest Regional Library.
The Surprise programs are sponsored by a grant award from the Sun City Rotary Club Foundation and those in Glendale by grant funding from the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts Commission.
Thanks to our ABT sponsors for their generosity!
ABT to Hold ARTrageous Raffle
As a long-time family-owned and operated business headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, the Park West Gallery and its Foundation are committed to building upon family values by “making significant contributions to strengthen the health, social, educational and cultural fabric of the communities they serve.”
As it happens, Arizona Broadway Theatre is fortunate living proof of that largesse.
ABT Board of Trustees member Cindy Ellis knew of the gallery’s interest in giving back to the community by supporting local not-for-profit organizations. “I decided it was worth a try and submitted a request for a donated piece of art to raise funds for the theatre,” Ellis said. “I am delighted that the gallery deemed ABT such a valuable community asset.”
ABT recently received the generous in-kind donation from Park West Gallery. According to Ellis, the unique piece of art will be the focal point of a future ARTrageous Raffle to benefit the theatre. The contemporary artwork – a Monoprint on paper by artist Mikulas Kravjansky – is framed in gold and numbered 1/1. The unique piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing the authorship of the work, which is appraised at a value of nearly $900.00 US.
Born in 1928 in Czechoslovakia, Kravjansky studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Bratislava and later became an Assistant Professor at the University of Bratislava before becoming an Assistant Master at Humber College in Toronto. His designs and paintings have been exhibited in Prague, Budapest and Vienna. If you’d like an opportunity for this exceptional piece of artwork to grace one of your walls, watch for an upcoming edition of ABT Exposed to learn more about the Artrageous Raffle and how to obtain tickets.
Thanks, Cindy and Park West Gallery!
Wondering about the ABT Ticket Donation Policy?
As you know, Arizona Broadway Theatre is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and must rely on financial support from the community-at-large. Yet, ABT recognizes the same need exists for other nonprofits and wants to play an important role in the community. The theatre believes it should serve as an example of a good corporate citizen and neighbor. Therefore, ABT is pleased to support other not-for-profits’ fundraising endeavors to the extent it is possible.
Because ABT receives several hundreds of donation requests each year, the theatre has implemented a Philanthropic Donation Policy by which it determines the donations it is able to grant.
If you are interested in applying for an in-kind contribution of tickets for a nonprofit fundraiser, please review the policy before submitting any request. Go to www.azbroadway.org and click on TICKETS on the left side of the home page. Open the drop-down menu and click on TICKET DONATIONS.
Kindly keep in mind that ABT is only able to approve a donation appeal in which every one of the specifications is met. In addition, please recognize that the theatre has strict financial considerations and may be unable to fulfill every request.
Best of luck with your fundraising endeavors!

FUND DEVELOPMENT MATTERS!
Encore!
ABT sends its sincere thanks to the Scottsdale-based Surplus Line Association of Arizona Foundation for making an “encore presentation” – a general and unrestricted grant of $3,500 to Arizona Broadway Theatre earlier this month. This is the second year in a row that the foundation has made a very generous gift to the theatre. Every donation to the 2011 ABT Annual Fund makes a positive difference!
A Standing “O” for the Fulchers
In late October 2010, Peoria residents Dale and Trish Fulcher brought an ABT Theatre for Young Audiences production of Hansel and Gretel to life for more than 100 area children and their families (parents and grandparents also delighted in the performance) at the Sunrise Mountain Library in Peoria.
Passionate about the arts and education – particularly for youngsters -- the Fulchers generously sponsored the free performance of the German Grimm Brothers fairy tale in loving memory of Grayce Evelyn McDowell Earl, Evelyn Earl Duncan, and Yolande Earl Lauerman, all of whom were members of Trish’s family and women who proudly chose the teaching profession as their vocations.
The Fulchers are keenly aware that arts and culture are vital to a well-rounded education. The couple is interested in encouraging the relationship between theatre arts and the vital development of perception, reasoning ability, imagination, creativity, expression, and key literacy skills among young children.
Thank you, Dale and Trish. We couldn’t do it without you!
Bravo, Peoria Arts Commission
In December 2010, the Peoria Arts Commission awarded two grants to Arizona Broadway Theatre for children’s arts programming.
Festival Grant funding in the amount of $3,000 helped to defray costs associated with The Second Annual Peoria Plays: A Youth Arts Festival, hosted by ABT on Saturday, January 29, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Several hundred children and their families enjoyed free admission to performances by Valley theatre arts organizations including ABT, the Musical Theatre of Anthem, the Spotlight Youth Theatre, and Theater Works, as well as by students from the Peoria Arts Institute at Foothills Elementary School in Peoria. Other interactive arts activities were provided by the Young Rembrandts, who taught drawing, and National Junior Honor Society students and their teachers from Mountain View School in Waddell, who taught origami, the ancient Japanese folk art of paper folding.
On Saturday, February 12, ABT’s Theatre for Young Audiences will take Cinderella! Cinderella! to the Sunrise Mountain Library for a special free performance, courtesy of the Peoria Arts Commission. This arts program grant in the amount of $2,500 will help to cover a royalty fee, production and stage management, set, prop and costume design and production, eight actors’ salaries and transportation of cast and equipment to the library, among other costs. This program serves to support early literacy in addition to offering an introduction and opportunity for children and their families to recognize the value of the performing arts. The play is free and open to the public; seating is limited.
Bunnies and spring – Ah, the perfect match!
Be on the watch for upcoming news about The Velveteen Rabbit hopping into Peoria, Glendale, and Surprise in March – right around the first day of spring!

“When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you've become real,” said the Rocking Horse.
That’s what children in Surprise will learn next spring when Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) takes its three-part Theatre for Young Audiences program, The Velveteen Rabbit, to the Northwest Regional Library.
This unique program became a step closer to reality on June 29 when the Sun City Rotary Foundation presented a $2,250 check to Arizona Broadway Theatre’s Director of Development, Pam Karwan, during the club’s weekly luncheon at the Sun City Country Club. The grant award will allow the theatre to present the free, multi-disciplinary program that fosters language arts, creative artistic expression and achievement, and an early introduction to and understanding of live theatre for local children.
Many thanks to the Sun City Rotary Foundation for this splendid gift, for being so actively involved in the community for almost 50 years, and for providing financial support to many local charities.
